Khi học tiếng Anh, chắc hẳn bạn đã từng nghe đến khái niệm idioms. Vậy idioms là gì? Và vì sao chúng ta nên học idioms ngay từ đầu?
1. Idioms là gì?
Idioms (thành ngữ) là những cụm từ cố định, có nghĩa bóng, không dịch theo từng từ.
Idioms được người bản xứ sử dụng rất nhiều trong giao tiếp hàng ngày, giúp câu nói trở nên tự nhiên, sinh động hơn.
Trong các kỳ thi TOEIC, IELTS, idioms thường xuất hiện trong Listening và Reading.
Ví dụ: It’s raining cats and dogs.
– Nghĩa đen: trời mưa mèo và chó
– Nghĩa bóng: trời đang mưa rất to
2. Tầm quan trọng của idioms
– Nâng cao kỹ năng nghe nói vì người bản xứ thường dùng idioms trong hội thoại, nếu bạn không hiểu thì dễ bị “lạc nhịp”.
– Biết dùng idioms đúng chỗ sẽ làm bạn nghe tự nhiên, chuyên nghiệp và gần gũi hơn.
– Trong TOEIC, IELTS hay TOEFL, idioms giúp bạn đoán nghĩa nhanh, xử lý bài đọc và nghe hiệu quả hơn.

👉 Idioms về sức khỏe
– Under the weather: cảm thấy không khỏe
Ex: I can’t go to work today, I’m a bit under the weather.
– Fit as a fiddle: khỏe mạnh, dẻo dai
Ex: My grandmother is 80 but still fit as a fiddle.
– On the mend: đang hồi phục
Ex: She had surgery last week but now she’s on the mend.
– At death’s door: rất ốm yếu, gần như hấp hối
Ex: He looked as if he was at death’s door after the accident.
– Black out: ngất xỉu
Ex: He suddenly blacked out during the meeting.
– Recharge one’s batteries: nghỉ ngơi lấy lại năng lượng
Ex: A short vacation will help you recharge your batteries.

Ex: He stole my thunder by announcing the idea before I did.

Ex: She’s been burning the midnight oil to finish her project.

Ex: Your analysis really hit the nail on the head.
– In the same boat: cùng cảnh ngộ

– Hit the books: bắt đầu học chăm chỉ
Ex: I have to hit the books tonight for tomorrow’s exam.
– Spill the beans: tiết lộ thông tin
Ex: Who spilled the beans about our secret plan?
4. Phân biệt Idioms và Collocations
– Idioms: Mang nghĩa bóng, không thể dịch từng từ.
Ví dụ: hit the book không phải “đánh quyển sách” mà là “bắt đầu học chăm chỉ”.
– Collocations: Là sự kết hợp từ tự nhiên, đúng ngữ pháp và cách dùng.
Ví dụ: make a decision (đưa ra quyết định), heavy rain (mưa to).
